The tower over the south transept, all that remains of Cluny Abbey following the decision taken during the French Revolution (1789) to turn it into a quarry and sell the stone. The revolutionaries also burned the archives and sacked the library. Once the biggest and, arguably, the most influential church in Christendom, the abbey was reduced to rubble 879 years after its foundation.
